After-Hours Coverage
After-hours coverage means a business can still answer a call or message outside its own opening hours, either by picking up automatically or by capturing enough information to follow up the next working day.

The default without it is a straightforward loss: a call at 9pm to a clinic that closed at 6 rings out, and the caller tries the next name on their list rather than waiting for morning. The gap isn’t a failure of anyone’s attentiveness — it’s structural, because a business’s hours and its customers’ free time don’t overlap as reliably as either side would like.
The bar for “coverage” varies by channel and by what’s actually useful: a voicemail that nobody checks for two days isn’t coverage in any meaningful sense, while a system that answers, books, or at minimum logs enough to call back with context, is.
The guide behind this term: nobody answers after you close.
