The WhatsApp Business API is the paid, developer-facing version of WhatsApp that lets a business send and receive messages programmatically at volume through an approved provider, instead of using the free WhatsApp Business app by hand.

The free app is one phone, one person, tapping out replies. The API is what lets an assistant, a shared inbox, or an automated order flow plug into WhatsApp at all — it’s the wire, not a product a business talks to directly. A business can’t apply for API access straight from Meta; that access is sold through a BSP, who handles the technical connection and usually a layer of tools on top.

Two rules come with it that don’t apply to the free app: messages outside a customer’s active 24-hour window need a Meta-approved template, and every number goes through a verification and quality-rating process before it can send at volume.

See it in practice on the WhatsApp assistant feature page.
