IVR (Interactive Voice Response)
IVR is the phone-menu system that plays "press 1 for sales, press 2 for support" and routes a caller based on which key they press, rather than understanding anything they actually say.

It’s the oldest form of phone automation still in wide use, and it’s cheap because it doesn’t need to understand language at all — just a keypad tone. Its limits are exactly that: a caller with an unusual question, one that doesn’t map cleanly onto a menu option, gets stuck pressing “0” for a person, or hangs up.
Newer voice AI systems are sometimes marketed loosely as “IVR” because they sit on the same phone line, but the mechanism is different — one plays a recorded menu and reads a keypress, the other understands speech and holds a conversation.
