Set up Website Guide
Create a public-website assistant, understand the first background build, and keep its answers linked to the pages visitors can read.
Website Guide is a dedicated assistant for a public help centre, documentation site or marketing website. It answers from the pages you choose and, when it finds supporting material, shows the visitor the page and section behind the answer.
It is separate from the ordinary knowledge base. The website content is stored in a private scope that only this assistant can search, so it cannot surface in another assistant’s answers by accident.
Before you start
You need the Website Knowledge Sync add-on and a public HTTPS website. The site must be readable without signing in. Start at the narrowest useful URL: use https://example.com/help/ for a help centre, or the home page when the whole site belongs in the guide.
Create the guide
- Open Bots and choose Website Guide.
- Give the assistant a name and paste the public website URL.
- Choose Build my website assistant.
Kooday creates the assistant, a website-chat setup and a private website knowledge scope together. It then starts the first build in the background. Nothing is made available to visitors until that build completes successfully.
Check the build
The Website Guide page shows the latest build status and the number of pages it discovered, indexed and skipped. A first build can take a little while on a large website. If it reports an error, first open the starting address in an incognito browser: pages that require a sign-in or block public readers cannot be used as evidence.
Use Sync now after publishing a meaningful change. A sync reads the public site again and updates the related sections without making website content available to other assistants.
The first plan includes up to 100 indexed pages and follows links up to three levels from the starting address when the site has no sitemap. Those are source policy settings, so a future plan can offer a larger crawl without changing the assistant or mixing in another site.
Add material that is not on the website
Use the Knowledge Base page and select the Website Guide scope when you upload private supplementary material. The guide can search that material alongside its crawl, while your other assistants still cannot. Keep public facts on the public site when you want visitors to receive a source link.
What visitors see
When the guide has a supported answer, its website chat can show a source card below the reply. The card links to the stored public page and, where the page has a real heading anchor, the relevant section. The assistant does not invent links or use a result from an earlier conversation.
Website Guide also recognises common schema.org JSON-LD: FAQ questions, products and services, company details, contact details and locations. A recognised location can include an Open in Maps link generated from validated address or coordinates.
If the website does not contain an answer, the guide should say that plainly rather than filling the gap from general knowledge. Add or correct the public page, publish it, and run a sync.
